Are you considering a hedgehog as your next pet? These little creatures can make wonderful pets. Here, your North Phoenix, AZ veterinarian tells you about some of the basics of hedgehog care.
Hedgehogs will be fed a high-quality pellet food, which makes up the bulk of their diet. Such foods are widely available at pet supply stores, retail outlets, and certain vets’ offices. A hedgehog’s diet should also be supplemented with fresh fruits and veggies, crickets, mealworms, and the occasional snip of fully-cooked meat.
The bottom of Hedgie’s cage should be lined with a safe wood-shaving bedding material. Most hedgehogs seem to prefer about an inch or two of bedding. Ask your veterinarian for a recommendation on a good brand and type of bedding for hedgehogs.
Handling your hedgehog often is the best way to get them acclimated to human touch and prevent anxiety. It’s unlikely that your hedgehog’s quills will cause injury, as they’re not very sharp; still, it’s best to scoop your hedgehog up from their belly when holding them.
