Dental disease is quite common amongst our canine companions. Brushing your pooch’s teeth at home is one of the best ways to keep plaque and tartar at bay! Here, your Sharon, ON veterinarian tells you how to brush your dog’s teeth.
First, pick up a canine-formulated toothpaste and a pet toothbrush at your local pet supply store. Start by massaging your dog’s teeth and gums with a finger; this gets him used to the brushing sensation. Slowly, introduce the paste and brush until your dog is comfortable.
When Fido is ready, brush each tooth vigorously—only focus on the outer tooth surfaces, as this is where plaque tends to accumulate. It may be helpful to have a family member or friend steady your dog while doing this.
Repeat and Reward
Move around to each area of your dog’s mouth so that all teeth get brushed. Offer your dog a tasty treat or two after brushing sessions are over—this reinforces the notion that brushing warrants a reward, making things easier in the future!
