Does your cat like catnip? It’s our feline friend’s favorite plant product! Catnip is common, but how much do you know about it? Learn more below from a Newmarket, ON vet.
What is Catnip, Anyway?
Catnip is an herb that grows naturally in the wild. It’s classified in the same plant “family’ as mint and other common herbs. In a pet store, you’ll find “raw” catnip, which is a dried and processed version of the plant that looks similar to oregano or basil flakes. You’ll also find toys and other products with catnip infused into them.
Is Catnip Safe?
Yes, catnip is perfectly safe for your feline friend. The chemical reaction that’s triggered in Fluffy’s brain isn’t harmful whatsoever, and it only lasts a few moments. Your cat cannot become addicted to catnip or overdose on the herb. Feel free to offer it to your pet whenever you’d like!
Why Isn’t My Cat Reacting?
Did you know that nearly half of all cats don’t respond to catnip? If your cat doesn’t possess a specific gene inherited from the parents, catnip won’t have any effect. Don’t worry, your cat isn’t broken!
