Explaining Your Cat’s Litterbox Aversion

Is Fluffy avoiding her litterbox and eliminating on the carpet? There could be several reasons why—learn more here from a Scottsdale, AZ vet.

Cats prefer to do their business in a clean and tidy bathroom; who wouldn’t? Scoop out your cat’s box daily, and change the litter entirely about once a week or so. This will keep things fresh and entice your cat to use her bathroom regularly.

If your cat commonly gets disturbed by noises or other family members while using the litterbox, she won’t be very keen on continuing to go there. Place the box in a quiet, out-of-the-way location like a basement or back bathroom.

Litter Preference

Clumping vs. non-clumping, scented and unscented, various grain sizes, different base materials… there are all sorts of litters out there, and different cats like different ones! Experiment a bit to find a litter type that your cat prefers. Don’t hesitate to ask your veterinarian for a recommendation.

If you still can’t get Fluffy to use her bathroom, pay a visit to your vet. Medical issues—injury, disease, stress or anxiety, and much more—could be to blame! Contact your veterinary clinic Scottsdale, AZ to set up an appointment.
