Are you new to dog ownership? You’ll need a leash for walking your canine companion, but it can be difficult to know what to get. Your Greensboro, NC veterinarian gives you a crash course below:
The Standard Leash
Almost all dogs will do fine with a standard leash. These are widely available in pet supply stores, grocery stores, and department stores. They’re typically made of nylon and are about six feet long; they’ll have a loop at one end for your hand, and a metal clasp at the other that attaches to your dog’s collar.
Retractable Leashes
Retractable leashes feature a spring-loaded handle mechanism, allowing your dog to roam out in front of you until you press a button to stop the leash from expanding further. They provide a bit less control than standard leashes, so use caution. Retractable leashes aren’t recommended if you’re walking Fido in a busy area.
Training Leashes
Leashes of all shapes, sizes, and materials can be used for training purposes; there are extra short and ultra-long, rubber leashes, and more. Unless directed specifically by your vet or an animal trainer, you probably won’t need to use one.
