Water Safety for Dogs

Many of our canine companions love to go swimming—it’s great exercise, and it’s lot of fun for the whole family! Be sure to keep your pet’s safety in mind, though. Learn more here from a Frisco, TX veterinarian.

Swimming Capability

Not all dogs are great swimmers; before dunking your canine companion into the water, make sure they can swim! Athletic retriever breeds are typically the best swimmers, while stubby, short-nosed breeds like bulldogs and pugs might not be comfortable in the water.

Provide Support

Whether or not your dog is a strong swimmer, always go into the water with them to provide support. This is especially important if you’re swimming in the ocean, as you don’t want your pooch venturing too far offshore.

The Final Rinse

Once your dog is done in the pool or the ocean, be sure to rinse them off with fresh water from the garden hose or a bathtub. You don’t want to leave chlorine or salt water in the coat, both of which can irritate and dry out the skin if not removed.
